On May 29, 1914, the Empress of Ireland collided with the Storstad, a Norweigan Freighter, in the St Lawrence River during heavy fog. 14 minutes after the collision, the Empress of Ireland slid beneath the water, taking 1012 of the 1477 souls onboard. Only 7 lifeboats were able to be launched during the sinking, as the Empress capsized quickly after the collision. Due to rescue efforts of the SS Storstad, many of the survivors that were rescued were rescued from the icy waters of the St. Lawrence.
