SS Andrea Doria

–SS Andrea Doria Sinking 1956 Special Event Station–

Please Note: N9D has officially ceased all operations, as the granted time for the callsign has expired. Thank you to everyone for their inquiries about the event, and to the stations that were able to make the logbook. Unfortunately, solar weather, HF propagation, and noise floors of S7-S8 on a consistent basis at the operations QTH made it very difficult all week. I apologize to everyone that wanted to make a contact, and was unable to. Please try again next year, in hopes that all negative factors this year will not be stacked up against the event once again.

On July 25, 1956, the SS Andrea Doria collided with the MS Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket in heavy fog. The Andrea Doria was the pride of the Italian Ocean Liners, nicknamed “The Grand Dame of the Sea.” 11 hours after the collision, on the morning of July 26, the Andrea Doria capsized and sank. While no lives were actually lost in the sinking, 46 individuals died from the initial collision.

Nathan, KC9HYY will be active as special event station N9D in remembrance of the 59th anniversary of the sinking. Operation times will be July 25 2015 0000 UTC to July 29 2359 UTC. Nathan will be active on HF bands 10-40m, VHF, UHF and 6m operating SSB and various digital modes including PSK31, JT65 and RTTY.

A special event QSL card is available to all stations who make a contact. The QSL can be obtained by sending an SASE to:
